Place: Mt. Momokura (百蔵山)
Height: 1,003 meters
Level: Average (一般者向き)
Hiking Time: 4 hours 40 minutes
Distance: Approx. 9 km
Elevation Difference/最大標高差: 680 meters
Getting There: Shinjuku Station-->Take Chuo Line to Saruhashi Station (1 hr 18 minutes / 1280 yen)
電車:新宿駅から中央線に乗って、猿橋駅に降りる。(1時間18分・1280円)
Getting Back: Same.
Plan:
Mt. Momokura is located in Yamanashi, about 90 minutes west of Tokyo. It is not very far from Mt. Fuji.
We will start from Shinjuku Station at about 8:15 a.m. Take the Chuo-Sen to Saruhashi station (猿橋駅)。
From the Saruhashi station, we will take a 40 minute walk (or bus if available) along the road to Fukusendera Iriguchi (福泉寺入口)。The hike up the mountain will start from here. It will take about 2 hours to reach the top of the mountain.
Toward the end of April through Golden Week, there will hopefully be flowers blooming, including cherry blossoms (ヤマザクラ). According to the guidebook cherry blossoms bloom around the end of April. To the south direction, we will be able to look at Mt. Fuji and other mountains.
Once we get to the top at about 1pm, we can eat lunch under the cherry blossoms if we are lucky.
It will then take about 2 hours to hike back down to Saruhashi Station.
We should be able to return to Sarubashi sometime between 4PM and 5PM.
Saruhashi Bridge: Saruhashi literally means "monkey bridge." If you walk over to the bridge, you will see that it has no legs and stretches about 30 meters over the river below. According to legend, the original idea for the bridge came when the designer saw two groups of monkeys on each side form teams by linking arms and legs until they made a bridge that allowed them to cross. Second theory, is the guy drank way too much sake and was hallucinating on some strange fermenting fish. Either way, monkey bridge is pretty cool, especially if you can picture it in ukiyoe colors.
Hotou Noodles: Houtou Noodles are large-sized udon noodles, famous in Yamanashii. The hot noodles often has pork and large portions of vegetables, like pumpkin, potato, carrots, and hakusai cabbage. There is a local udon/soba shop where you can eat after the hike.
Onsen: There will not be an onsen on this hike.
